The Traditionsraum in Wesel: Nuclear wapons and Predatory birds

A visit to Wesel brought us an interesting combination of sites. Firstly a member of the Traditionsraum at the Schill Kazerne in Wesel showed us the interesting museum and archive of the Raketenartilleriebattalion 150. The battalion emcompassed 6 companies which were there based between 1965-2002. The soldiers were trained to apply the use of nuclear wapons during the Cold War. The Traditionsraum is still used as a place for the soldiers to meet, as a club house. There are all kinds of (historical) objects, related to the batallion, from uniforms, techinical equipment, models, photographs, magazines, memory plates etc. It functions as an archive and a private museum. A way to make the place meaningful after that it has been used as a place for training years and years for events that, luckily, never occured.

The Greifvogel Station was very impressive. The birds are picked up by volunteers in case they got hurt in a manner that the birds can not survive without some human interference. Very experienced and knowledgable people take care of the birds, untill they can be trained to set back to nature. In german: auswildern.
